Riverbank picked up three awards at the Children & Young People’s Service Awards ceremony which took place yesterday evening at the Beach Ballroom.

The CYPS Awards celebrate achievements in Aberdeen City by children, young people and adults who work with children and young people. For those attending, it is a very special exciting and nerve-racking evening as the nominations in each category are read out and then the golden envelope is opened and the winner is announced. Throughout the evening, entertainment was provided by pupils from schools across the city and, much to the delight of some of our young pupils who attended to represent Riverbank, there was a buffet provided with some tasty morsels!!

But….back to business. Riverbank was nominated in seven categories.

  • Global Citizenship – The Big Knit – our novice knitters making their squares to provide blankets for orphans in Malawi, Befriend a Child and even a teacher with a new baby.
  • Enterprising Young People – The Smoothie Group – Mrs Spry’s intrepid smoothie makers, who invent new recipes, make the smoothies and sell them in
  • ICT Award – Miss MacAulay and P1A for their Dinosaur video
  • Positive Ethos – The RRSA Steering Group for their initiative in producing a DVD on the positive ethos of Riverbank School
  • Raising Achievement – The Rainbow Garden – It speaks for itself
  • Healthy Living – Miss Gardner, Miss Joyce and the children in upper stages who helped organise a month of healthy living activities and information sessions
  • Integrated Working – This was the work of Miss Logan and the Riverbank Nursery staff along with Miss MacDonald from the Educational Psychology Department who did huge research on Attachment Theory

It was fantastic to have all seven of our nominations short-listed and although we were a little disappointed that all seven didn’t turn out winners, we were so proud to have even reached the short-listed stage and even more proud when The Big Knit, The Smoothie Group and The Dinosaur Video were all named winners in their category.

Our certificates and mini shields will soon be on display in school.

Many people attending the event were kind enough to come and speak to the Riverbank entourage and congratulate us on how well the school had done.

There is such a lot of great work going on at Riverbank, that we would like to take this occasion to blow our own trumpet for a little and to thank everyone, all staff and pupils for making Riverbank the great place that it is.
