Samba Drumming and Dancing @ Riverbank

Brazilian Fever Hits Riverbank!!!

Drumming!

Once again and following the fantastic success of last year, Riverbank was visited by Al and Shona from One Day Creative Ltd.

One Day Creative Education Ltd are based in Wetherby, Yorkshire but they provide Creative Days on a wide range of subject areas. They sent us the same two fabulous tutors who were with us last year, Al and Shona. Al is the tutor for the drumming and Shona tutors the samba dance class. What these two folks get out of the children, in what is a very short space of time, is amazing and the children thoroughly enjoy the experience.

Below is a video of the Samba Drumming. Al coaches the children for a short period of time on various rhythms and then leads them in a drumming performance. The whole process takes no more than half an hour and the final result is absolutely great! It’s a pity we couldn’t have this all year round!!! It always makes the place feel sunny!

If you are a parent or carer and would like to view the video, please ask in school.

Article 29Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

Samba Dancing!!

While Al is busy coaching the drummers, another class is busy learning the rudiments of Samba Dancing with Shona.

The whole day is timetabled beautifully by Mrs Macleod, who ensures that all the children have a chance to experience the drumming and the dancing.

Shona teaches the classes a series of Samba moves and they, step by step, build up these moves until they have a Samba routine which they then perform. I was fortunate enough to be in with one of the classes when Shona was working with them and I couldn’t believe, like the drumming, what could be produced in such a short space of time.

The relaxed atmosphere and endless enthusiasm of Shona and Al shines through in the way they work with the children and they, in turn, get the very best from the children.

I have no doubt that Riverbank will have a One Day Creative session, again, in the not too distant future. Well done to everyone and a special thank you to Miss Mitchell and Primary 6 for allowing us the opportunity to have a ‘wee’ taster of what the children at Riverbank experienced with their drumming and dancing!
